Physical Education UpdateLead Teacher WorkshopWe had a successful 3 ½ day workshop in the holidays, with a total of 25 participants from schools all over the Southern Group. We covered a range of ways to change the competitive culture in our schools to move away from a Sports focus in PE, and focus more on the Education part, where teaching Essential Skills in PE, such as Problem Solving, Communication Skills, and Social-cooperative skills, leads the focus away from competition and winning. |

Performing Arts: Northern GroupWhat an amazing experience it was for me to come and visit your beautiful Northern Group Islands. It was an especially exciting time due to the Life skills program, which brought new learning and friendship and wonderful examples of how the Performing Arts afford people an opportunity to express their culture and build community. Traditional Arts are a great strength in all the communities I visited. |

Outer Islands Lifeskills ProgrammeThe Outer Islands (OI) Lifeskills programme has been in operation for most outer islands for over 3 years. Opportunities to improve its process have been made to ensure ineffective aspects are minimized and eventually eliminated. Find below a copy of the forms, as part of the recommended process and systematic approach to ensuring an effective and efficient implementation process for any OI Lifeskill Programme. Application Forms- Limited Autority To Teach - Application Form - The school on behalf of the tutor must apply to the Director of Administration to register under the “Limited Authority to Teach” (LAT) category. A copy of identification as well as a character reference is also required. This is a legal requirement.
- Outer Islands Lifeskills Programme Course - Application Form - The “Lifeskills course application form” must be written by a registered teacher on the school staff in consultation with the tutor. The Secretary of Education must give approval and endorsement before the course is implemented.
- Outer Islands Lifeskills Programme - Timesheet- The Lifeskills tutor must sign in and out with every lesson. Send the separate ‘Lifeskills Timesheet’ along with your weekly staff timesheet to the Director of Administration.
For more engaging stories of the lifeskills programmes running in the outer islands, coming up in August an extensive coverage of the Northern Group Lifeskills Programme. |

What Supports and Enhances a Quality Environment There are a multitude of factors that influence children’s capacity to learn and these factors differ from child to child.
Whilst one child shows a preference for visual stimuli another’s preference may be aural, and yet, a third, kinaesthetic. However, irrespective of the child’s preferred modality, a quality learning environment is critical if real learning is to take place whether inside or outside of the classroom. |

DAQA Notices: March Student Achievement Targets. The purpose of all schools is that of teaching and learning and this implies student achievement. Schools have been asked to focus on improving student achievement. To this end all schools are now required to set achievement targets (as a percentage) and to measure student achievement against the school’s targets. The Ministry’s “School Achievement” monitoring tool (DAQA Excel spreadsheet) was developed specifically for this purpose. Regular entry of student achievement data from classes across all ELAs will enable school management to easily monitor achievement by class and across the whole school. |
