PE Profile -Term 2, 2010SOUTHERN GROUP LEAD TEACHER WORKSHOP We had an awesome week in the April Holidays learning about Outdoor Education, Adventure Based Learning, Essential Skill Activities, creating Assessment and Traditional Games resources, earning certificates in Rugby and Soccer Coaching, and how to cheat at Coco Putt! A shame that the Rarotonga Schools attendance was poor, but good on you to those that attended! It is you and your students who will benefit!
JUMP JAM WORKSHOP Around 50 teachers from nearly every school attended this session at Avatea School! Was so great to see everyone moving in time, and having a laugh! Remember, once I see this being used in schools, I will give out more DVD’s and CD’s to use. JUMP JAM in SCHOOLS In schools such as Te Uki Ou and Takitumu, Jump Jam was already being used, and it is neat to see that it has become part of an everyday occurrence. Not only is it fun, but it is a great way to help get our students (and teachers!) active, and focused at the beginning of the day. Well done to these schools! Also well done to Avatea and St Josephs who have taken on the Jump Jam challenge, and have also introduced it at their schools. Awesome to see! PAPAAROA Papaaroa has been doing aerobics and fitness as part of their School Wide Exercise Programme. This is a great initiative, and now that they have Jump Jam, they can incorporate this also. Keep up the amazing work Papaaroa! ARORANGI Was neat to be invited to the Arorangi Staff Zumba classes! Unfortunately I was held up, but I have heard from teachers that it was heaps of fun and that they are continuing with it!! Well done Arorangi, keep up the good work!.
TE UKI OU I have seen some really neat things in the PE programme here. I have taken part in teaching and observing in the Junior School, and it is neat to see enthusiastic teachers, ready to take on advice, and who are not afraid top ask for help and ideas. Good on you Te Uki Ou, excellent work! AVATEA I have been working in the Junior School here too. It’s great to be asked to ‘get amongst it’, and teach the students, and then observe teachers doing the same. Again these teachers are not afraid to ask for new ideas etc. The students are having a great time in PE at Avatea School. The Senior students have been lucky enough to have the Year 12’s from Tereora teaching them as part of an NCEA assessment. Awesome to see the two schools working together, helping each other out. RAROTONGA SCHOOLS PE LEAD TEACHER MEETING This session had good representation from the schools, and we managed to get through some more Essential Skill activities etc. We also looked through the School PE Goals that we came up with at the beginning of the year, to see how we were going. Some schools are making progress, and some need to work a bit harder on them. Teachers were also asked to complete a questionnaire on what they think PE is, and what sport is. Some interesting answers… The next Rarotonga Schools PE Lead Teacher Meeting will be held in Week 4, August 31st, at Rutaki School, 2.30pm start. PE vs SPORT Please remember, that only ONE of the FOURTEEN Achievement Objectives in our Curriculum refers to Movement Skills, and does not have to apply to specific Sports Related Skills. Yes in PE we teach some Sports Skills, so that students can play a game, but it is not the be all, and end all. Sport is not PE. o In PE, our aim is to have everyone participating and actively moving in any way. o Sport, refers to the inter-school tournaments during the year, and perhaps on Fridays you will have a Sports competition. I love how at Titikaveka College, the Friday Sports consists of activities and games that include everyone, and are not specific sports. Well done Titikaveka, keep up the good work in developing all dimensions of the students’ and teachers’ Pitoenua!
CRICKET WORKSHOP A disappointing turn out to the Eastern Side workshop, but the Western Side turn out made up for it! Congrats to Arorangi School who had the biggest number of staff there! A great opportunity for us all to gain knowledge, have some fun and earn a certificate too! Hopefully teachers now have the confidence to introduce Cricket into schools, and remember the Cricket Boys are only a phone call away. I know that their teaching resource is almost completed, so we look forward to that getting into the school too. PENZ (Physical Education New Zealand) July 5-7, Wellington, New Zealand. We had four of us attend this Conference, to gain new ideas and resources to bring back to the Cooks’ and introduce here. The teachers who attended are currently compiling a report on the sessions they took part in, which we will go over at the next Lead Teacher Meeting. For those people in Outer Islands, I will get round to you all, and inform you. I know that Teata in Mauke has already presented to her staff, and I will call on Terangi from Araura College to report in Aitutaki. Vanessa Palmer from Tereora has already completed her report and handed it I to me, with some really good ideas and recommendations. Awesome work team, let us now spread the word! FIEP (International Federation of Physical Education) July 7-9, Suva, Fiji. I managed to be in two places in one week! This conference was the first of its kind in Oceania, for the Pacific States to share what is happening in their own territories. We had representation from 9 of the 14 states which was a good start! New Zealand, Australia, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands, Fiji, PNG, Samoa and Federated States of Micronesia were present, and we all learnt a lot of things from each other. We also had presenters from Hawaii, Poland, Czech Republic and California. Examples of sessions that were held; o Teaching Swimming is Pacific Islands, o Adventure Education, o Adapted PE for people with disabilities, o Literacy in Creative Movement, o Using Sports to Stop HIV An informative conference, next time I’d like to see more Pacific Islands presenting. Samoa 2012, is the next conference, watch this space… ATHLETICS KITS and TIMETABLE (Rarotonga Schools) Continuing on from last year, we have these amazing Athletics Kits, that Ake Hosea-Winterflood has given to the MOE to use in Schools. I have put together a time table for next term, for schools to have access to these kits. Please note, that 4 schools, have these kits for 2 weeks, as they are the four schools that attended the session last year, on how to use them. We will be holding a brief session on this for the rest of the schools, at the PE Lead Teacher meeting in Week 4. Week Kit One Kit Two
