Schools: Upcoming EventsNext month schools will be abuzz preparing themselves for a range of activities organized by the Ministry. Outer islands are expected to start arriving from Atiu, Mitiaro, Mauke, Aitutaki and Mangaia from Friday 16 July. On the following Monday (19 July 2010), beginning at 1pm the Women in Science and Technology seminar - (WISAT) will be held at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa. This is an afternoon seminar that provides an opportunity for students to talk with successful women presenters about their chosen career pathway in science or technology. This is facilitated by the Science Advisor, Jane Taurarii. All outer islands female students and some invited Rarotongan students will attend. At the same time the outer island male students and some invited Rarotongan students will attend the BoyZone seminar at USP run by Ian George, Visual Arts Advisor. This seminar provides an opportunity for students to hear from successful men about their careers in humanity career pathways such as teaching, social work, nursing, disabilities, languages and fine arts. During the day, beginning at 9am, Career teachers will be undergoing a Professional Development program at the Crown Beach Resort, providing a networking opportunity for Careers Teachers from the Outer Islands and Rarotongan Schools. On the 20th and 21st of July, there will be Vocational Taster Courses for students interested in hospitality and tourism or the Trade School. These courses will provide an opportunity for students to experience what it would be like training in Rarotonga with courses provided by HTTC and the Trade Centre. Courses like Automotive Engineering, Carpentry and Electronics will be offered by the Trade School and will cover safety requirements, expectations, tours of workshops, some practical work and site visits. On Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22nd July schools will have a roster to attend the Careers Expo that will be held at the Telecom Sports Arena. From the 26 - 30 July students are scheduled for work experience as a follow - up to the Careers Expo. For Tukao, Ruamanu (Tauhunu) and Rakuraku (Rakahanga) Schools, there are 3 major events planned from 19th - 23rd July: a mathematics quiz, the tennis and volleyball tournament and the Dancer of the Year.Next month schools will be abuzz preparing themselves for a range of activities organized by the Ministry.
