Secretary of Education speech

The education system is directed by Government policy to work with people to equitably and efficiently provide relevant, high quality education programmes to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes required by each individual to become a valued member of the Cook Islands society, and to adapt successfully to the modern, ever-changing world.

As a result of the education system, Cook Islands people will be empowered to fulfil their social and economic needs and aspirations by being prepared to compete successfully in the global economy and to prudently control their physical and cultural environment.

The statement below sets the direction for education in the Cook Islands. It is consistent with Government policy of “working together with the people in building a better nation” and recognising that people are our greatest resource.

All people in the Cook Islands will have equitable access to quality learning opportunities across the full spectrum of human endeavor from birth.Cook Islands Education Sector Policy Framework 2007

Location

The Ministry of Education is nestled at the foothills of Maungaroa in the village of Nikao, approximately six kilometres west of the main township of Avarua.

Recent Developments: The Ministry of Education has now been moved temporarily to the Aitutaki hostel in Avarua to make way for the new multipurpose sports complex being built for the 2009 Mini Pacific Games. A new headquaters will be built at the old site after the Multisports complex is completed.

It's location is unique in that the Ministry is housed in what was formerly a hostel for outer islands students attending the national secondary school of Tereora College - a short walk to the east of the site.

The hostel was then known as Are Kaute. It now houses the offices of the Secretary of Education, Administration, Audit and Quality Assurance, Finance and the Information Technology arm of the Ministry of Education - EduNet.

To the west of the administration block and below is the Teachers’ Training College, The Curriculum Advisory Unit and the resource printing room.
